Lieberman Backs GOP's Collins In Maine

http://www.courant.com/news/lo...

December 24, 2007

After being asked by Collins for his support, Lieberman announced in April that he would endorse her. He has since raised money for her campaign in Hartford, Conn., and in Washington, D.C., and has contributed $10,000 from his political action committee.

Lieberman said he hopes his endorsement doesn't backfire and that it helps Collins' campaign.

"I'm disappointed to become such a target from liberal Democrats," he said. "Sometimes in our politics today, partisanship overcomes friendship, and that's a value that I don't respect."

Joe, Joe, Joe. The only two candidates that you have thrown your support behind are both Republicans and you are disappointed that you are a target from Democrats? Well, let me inform you Joe that I don't respect many of your values. And any time anyone disagrees with you then it's called partisan.

Others suggest that the endorsement could backfire by generating more support for Allen from liberal Democrats who use the Internet to organize and raise money, and who regard Lieberman as a pariah because of his advocacy of the war in Iraq.

"Nobody fires up the Netroots more than Joe Lieberman, not even President Bush," said Amy Walter, editor of the political newsletter The Hotline.

Well value this Joe. I will work hard against Collins. I do not respect you or her. Period.

History won't be kind to Joe Lieberman... (4.00 / 1)
How does he forget that he was the Dem V-P nominee in 2000?

If he had half a clue, he'd quietly sit on the sidelines, and not engage in such psych-driven dramas. Instead he renders himself a joke....

We kicked him out (4.00 / 3)
but too many Democrats wanted to believe. They wanted to believe that Joe was just "good 'ol Joe" and they pulled the lever in the belief that he would still be a good Dem, even if a majority of the party voted him out.

They wanted to believe. Just like a seven year old who knows logically that there is no Santa wants to believe. They make all the right sounds, they write letters to Santa because it hurts to give up those dreams and live in the world of reality, where digital cameras cost $150 and dad just lost his job and Santa has to be real, or that camera isn't going to be under the tree no matter how good you were to your little sister, that rat! So they believed. They believed it when he stroked their old feeling with lies. They believed when he promised them he was still one of them, and that he was just like some of their old heroes. They believed.

But the GOP in CT knew. The republican voters knew that he had turned, that he wasn't "good 'ol Joe" anymore. That he was on the Bush/Cheney train and he was a conductor taking tickets for the ride into hell. They knew, and they believed, and they were right. They abandoned the campaign of their own to embrace the one who truly represented them. They jumped up and gave him their money and their support knowing that he would pay them back tenfold for their efforts. That he would continue to hurt those he claimed to represent and help their leader dive that train past station after station as they drove this country into Dante's inferno.

Metaphors and classic writing style aside. What the hell did you expect from Lieberman? He's a two-faced lying sack of shit and he was enabled by the CT Democratic leadership. Hell, his enablers even include the Majority Leader in the Senate who won't strip his ass from his chairmanship and bounce his ass out of the caucus for raising money for GOP candidates to run against Democrats and supporting/endorsing a GOP presidential candidate.

Of course he raises funds for the GOP candidates, supports their runs against good Democrats and even endorses them. There is no reason not to. No one is going to do a damn thing to him for all of this. Not NancyD, not Reid, no one. He can run roughshod over the people and the Democrats and no one will give him so much as a slap on the wrist. Hell, if you talk to his CT Dem supporters now, they still won't say a bad word about him. Oh they may express some level of "disappointment" and how they "don't agree with him", but we all know that doesn't count for squat. He knows he can get away with it because our "leadership" are a bunch of spineless wimps and they won't do squat.

And that's the real sad part of this story.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Just practicing. I have two candidates in the coming general who I'm working for. Every once in a while I have to practice my formal speech making writing here ;-) Just be glad that neither is running in a tight race where I have to use repetitive style and both are really good at metaphoric phrasing. :-)

Oy vey again! (0.00 / 0)
Joe Joe Joe....what are we doing to do with you?
Anyways, just reading this makes me all steamed again
because in 2006, my dad actually gave money ($200) to
Joe's campaign so he could meet him in person at a
fundraiser!!!  And my dad had NEVER given to a political
candidate at all previously!  Believe me, last year it
was a house divided....me for Lamont, my dad & mom for
Lieberman!  I love my folks but believe me it made for some tense moments!  And yes, when Joe gave McCain his
endorsement recently, I ragged on my dad again saying
"see? see what happens when one votes someone like that back into office?"  Never a dull moment I'll say!

McCain Lieberman (0.00 / 0)
Michael Medved feeds McCain-Lieberman speculation among an audience of conservative orthodox Jews.

The two men trashed one candidate after another, until a woman in the back of the room offered the final question of the day: What about a McCain-Lieberman ticket?

[....] Medved paused. He'd had lunch several times with McCain, he confessed. And maybe ... no, he couldn't tell about it. It was off the record information.

"Turn off the tape!" one man shouted at the video technician recording the session.

Smiling slightly, Medved relented: "I don't think it's an unthinkable possibility, and it would be a very strong ticket." Although he's not ready to give up on the Republicans, and although Luchins is still holding out hope for a strong Democratic ticket, the two agreed that McCain-Lieberman 2008 wasn't a bad idea at all.

The two men are close friends, Medved noted, "and people would love a unity ticket that would put America's interests first."

Unity Ticket My Foot! (0.00 / 0)
Since both McCain and Lieberman have taken strong positions that are contrary to the clear wishes of a large majority of the public, their "team" would be likely to lose badly.  That might force Harry Reid (or his replacement) to throw Joe out of the Democratic caucus.  Not a bad outcome when you consider the current situation. . .

I suppose... (0.00 / 0)
...like Zell "zig-zag" Miller, "Jumpin-joe" will end up merely an asterisk in the history of the Democratic party.

In some ways, the party leadership doesn't need to do anything. Jumpin-joe is doing it all to himself. Just sit back and let him go. Actually I think that is what infuriates joe the most, he knows what the Democratic leadership thinks of him.

I get the feeling Allen is going to crush Collins.

Lincoln Chafee... ? (n/t) (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
*shakes head* (0.00 / 0)
Chafee had negative approval ratings even from republicans. Collins is getting high approvals from both republicans and democrats, and independents as well. Without the war/Bush to pin her to it's hard to see where Tom Allen gains enough ground.

[ Parent ]
*nods and weaves* (0.00 / 0)
Part of the strategy is to force Republicans to defend what should be safe seats.

For example, a lot of the money that joey had to spend on the primary and general election could have gone to Rob Simmons or Nancy Johnson.

Let them think we can knock off Collins. She'll start acting like it just might happen. High approvals don't always translate to votes.

[ Parent ]
A lot of money did go to Simmons and Johnson (0.00 / 0)
I doubt if republicans are too concerned at this point with Susan Collins, especially when they have a half dozen other more pressing issues in the Senate (Coleman, Sununu, etc)

Now Faux moderate Chris Shays however...:)

yes, but it's still early... (0.00 / 0)
Tom Allen's favorability numbers and poll ratings are weak compared to Collins. Hopefully, once the campaign revs up and people start paying attention, the numbers will start to change.

Allen is a big underdog in that fight. If he wins, it will be a huge upset. It won't be easy.

[ Parent ]
I suggest taking another look at the numbers... (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for linking this to the very interesting article with the poll numbers.  I would read the figures as being more favorable to Allen and less to Collins.  Collins' "favorable" ratings are under 50% for the state, and barely over in one region.  50% is a tipping point for an incumbent.  If she is teatering on 50/50, she's vulnerable.  Although Allen is lower, so are his "don't know him" ratings.  Those can be pulled up over several months.  Indeed, if the incumbent is barely pulling 50% or is below, it means that voters are willing to take a look at the alternative.

I think these very early numbers are not at all disappointing for Allen.  Were I on his staff, I would feel that, although the task remains large, a win is definitely a possibility.

Hypocrite (0.00 / 0)
"I'm disappointed to become such a target from liberal Democrats," he said. "Sometimes in our politics today, partisanship overcomes friendship, and that's a value that I don't respect."

It's arguable (I think indisputable) that the Clintons (and their establishment allies) bailed Lieberman out in '06, and he endorsed McCain when HRC was running in the other primary... now he's talking about how he 'values' friendship? (and I am not a Hillary Clinton supporter, her support of Lieberman being one of the reasons).
He's despicable.

Lieberman's endorsement helps McCain, but not with INDEPENDENTS... (0.00 / 0)
Lieberman's endorsement helps McCain with Republicans (h/t FDL):

It's true that the Lieberman endorsement will help McCain - but with conservatives more than independents.

According to a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll released last week, Lieberman's endorsement makes only 15% of independents more likely to vote for McCain, yet it persuades 25% of Republicans.

Per my progressive friends in Midcoast Maine..... (0.00 / 0)
Tom Allen is viewed as a weak candidate and I have heard more
than a few people wonder why a stronger candidate was not put forth.  But whichever person wins in Maine cannot come close to being as disgusting as our junior senator, so we are the big losers in Connecticut.

We want to help Tom Allen win (0.00 / 0)
Let your progressive friends know that we wish Tom Allen the best, and we hope that he wins his Senate race.  As the 2008 election heats up, feel free to let us know how we can help.

We look forward to actively supporting Tom Allen in 2008.
